Help Wanted, But For How Long? A Review Of The Jobs Report

The weekly jobless report is out and while the number of Americans filing new unemployment benefits edged down 2,000 to 29,000 claims last week, the downward trend is tapering off slightly. Tom White breaks down the overall themes of the report with Richard Wahlquist/CEO American Staffing Association and Ed Butkowsky/Managing Partner Chapwood Investments. Three highlights of the report: continuing labor supply imbalances/skills gaps, the gap between open jobs and the skills of job seekers is not narrowing and a double digit growth in temporary and contract workers. The overall labor market remains tight with 11M jobs openings or 2 openings for every unemployed American. But with rising reports of companies issuing layoffs and enacting hiring freezes, job openings are set to trend lower.
