Why Retailers Are Breaking Up

In the thick of the holiday shopping season Marino Marin discusses the latest trends taking place in the retail sector. Marin says an overall theme of U.S. equities lately has been the quest for shareholder value, which is especially prevalent among retailers, and has led to many companies diversifying and breaking up their business models. Just this month Kohl’s (KSS) was urged by an activist investor to either sell the company or spin off its e-commerce business in the interest of shareholder value. Marin says the most important factor for a company making these changes is to preserve its omnichannel experience, making sure customers don’t see a difference in the product, delivery or brand.
